Qualifications
Piano tuning courses are available at the Newark and Sherwood College which runs a three-year course in tuning, maintenance and repair leading to ASET certificates in Classical Music Instrument Technology (Piano). The Royal National College for the Blind run a training program with a VIEW qualification. (Association for the Education and Welfare of the Visually Handicapped) This lasts for two years. London Metropolitan University has a Foundation Degree in Musical Instruments with the option of specializing in piano tuning. Some piano firms offer in-house training in piano tuning.
What would I earn?
As a rough guide initial earning are likely to be low and after two years in the profession they could earn around pounds 15,000 a year. With five years experience they can earn around pounds 25,000 and at the top of the profession it can rise to pounds 40,000.
What are the working conditions?
Hours are usually flexible to suit the tunes and the customer. Some weekend and evening work may be required. Most work in people's houses. They may also work in schools, theatres, and concert halls. Local travel is necessary so a driving license would be helpful.
